… and she’s speaking at the Lib Dem conference.
The author of a withdrawn report which still might get Amnesty International sued is speaking at the Liberal Democrat party’s autumn conference. Chiara Capraro, Amnesty’s Gender Justice Warrior Director is part of a fringe panel event called Anti-rights: the threat from Christian Nationalism and the far right.
Capraro is an expert on anti-rights, having authored the July 2026 report A Growing Threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK, in which she says some people are “anti-rights”, whilst acknowledging “rights belong to everyone equally”.
A Growing Threat notes a recent rise in the number of (apparently self-described) “anti-gender” organisations. “Anti-gender” organisations are run by “anti-rights actors” who apparently “seek a society in which women and men have fixed and distinct roles, based on what they view as ‘natural’ and ‘traditional’”. Right.
The report was withdrawn by Amnesty after Capraro decided a woman-only rape crisis centre – Beira’s Place – was “anti-rights” on the basis it didn’t let men use it. Liberal Voice for Women, which campaigns for women’s sex-based rights within the Liberal Democrats, was also one of the organisations Capraro branded “anti-rights”.
On 31 July, Amnesty decided Capraro’s report fell “significantly short” of its standards and “should never have been published”, because it “does not represent our institutional position”. They made clear they “apologise to Beira’s Place and other groups, which we categorised as gender critical organisations, which we should not have collectively labelled as anti-rights.”
Amnesty also announced an internal investigation and referred itself to the Charity Commission.
Water Under the Bridge
Capraro is due to speak at the Lib Dem conference on 6.15pm on Sunday 20 September. She is billed as representing Amnesty International. The group welcoming Capraro’s expertise is the Humanist and Secularist Liberal Democrats. Humanists UK called the For Women Scotland Supreme Court Ruling “a frightening setback“. The Liberal Democrats hold, as party policy: “trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid”.
Dr Zoe Hollowood, Chair of Liberal Voice for Women said: “Alongside other women’s rights organisations, Liberal Voice for Women was disturbed and disappointed to see Amnesty International describe us as an anti-rights organisation in their recent report… we are not anti anyone. We note that Amnesty International has now withdrawn the report in question and we welcome the opportunity provided at the conference fringe event to question the author of the report, Chiara Capraro, about how she arrived at her erroneous conclusions..”
I have asked Amnesty International UK if Capraro is speaking with their full backing in the light of the ongoing investigation into her discredited reports, and I am awaiting a response.
